CHRISTMAS 2011 NEWSLETTER

In this issue we wish to discuss some Life Insurance claim statistics, a positive initiative from OnePath towards client wellbeing and the forthcoming festive season.

Life Insurance claims statistics

This is a topic that is often brushed aside but we must all recognise that Life Insurance is taken out for a reason and claims are reality no matter of age, occupation or current health status.

What really highlighted this to us were some statistics issued by insurers that not only showed the volume of claims paid, the common health issues causing claims and also the age ranges of claimants.

One insurer has paid $64m in death claims in the last three years with 39% being for cancer related issues and 30% for heart issues.  You will think this is to be expected but the youngest claimant was only 24, the oldest 90 and the average age of claimants was 56. Please remember death cover is often paid out once a client is diagnosed with 12 or less months to live and this enables them to have quality of life in their final months with us.

New Zealanders claimed more than $107m over a two year period for trauma and TPD payments with cancer accounting for 63% and heart issues a further 14%.  The youngest claimant was only 11 and the oldest was 66.

In the same two year period New Zealanders claimed more than $84m in income protection payments and muscular and limb claims accounted for 48% of all claims.  Claimants were aged from 22 and 81% were males.

From these statistics we can see that both the young who are only starting out in life through to those with families or heading to retirement are all susceptible to having health issues that can leave them or their families in financial strife.

Could you or your family survive a financial crisis? – Are your mortgage payments insured against accident or illness?

No matter what your financial situation, you should have an open, no obligation, discussion with our consultants to see where you are at and what sort of financial plan will work to secure yours or your families future.  Please call us on 03 379 6847 or email admin@supernz.co.nz to arrange a convenient time for you to meet with us.

Insurer initiatives

OnePath have recently released their Client Membership benefits and if you are a OnePath client, you have access to this free and independent service.  OnePath want to support their clients on their journey through life by providing additional support that may help to prevent a minor problem from becoming something major.  This includes:

·         Budgeting advice;

·         Career counselling;

·         Health management;

·         General counselling and more.

To put this into perspective, a OnePath client in Christchurch had a three year old daughter traumatised by the February 2011 earthquake.  Whilst the client’s policies did not cover psychologists, they were able to seek assistance through the Client Membership Benefits. The parents and child were able to attend a number of sessions with a clinical psychologist and work through the trauma all at no cost to them.

This type of initiative is a great step forward and shows that insurers are there to assist in many ways providing you come forward to the likes of ourselves and keep us informed of any change in your circumstances.

If you are a OnePath client or wish to know more about the Client Membership benefits or other ways insurers may be able to assist you please call us on 03 379 6847 or email admin@supernz.co.nz
