Why is planning so important?

In the famous words of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus – “Change is the only constant in life.”
And planning for your future, and financial future, may be a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’.

When things change, and when the journey of your life moves onto the next stage, it helps to have something look out for. So, while there may not be ‘the perfect plan’, it’s the value in planning ahead that could make a difference in the long run.

When it comes to financial planning, here are some things that may be worth keeping in mind.

It can give you peace of mind

Conversations and decisions about your finances may be a bit challenging or emotionally-charged sometimes, but according to research, New Zealanders who have an adviser in their corner, and a financial plan in front of them, feel a bit better prepared for the future and more confident in their financial decision-making.

And that can be a significant stress-reliever – a 2020 survey conducted by the Financial Services Council found a strong link between money and our overall wellbeing.

Reaching life’s milestones

Planning means having a roadmap that shows how to get to your destination – the life’s milestones you’d like to achieve.

The moments that add value, and meaning to your life, may be something worth planning for. These could be anything from buying a house through to starting a family, paying off your debts, looking after your loved ones, or living a comfortable retirement. Having a plan in place can help you put things in perspective and see the bigger picture that you could be working towards.

Buffer for the rough times

Something we all know too well by now is that things don’t always go to plan. And that’s all the more reason to have a plan.

While we cannot foresee the future, we can focus on building resilience in our personal and financial lives. Financial planning is about creating a buffer between you and the curveballs that life may throw your way, by minimising risks and making your money work harder for you in the meantime.

That may be what it takes to get you closer to the future you’d like to have.
