We often get asked why bother financial planning.

Generally, there is a fair bit of apathy around money. If things are ticking along okay, and people aren’t focussed on changing something because of pleasure of pain, it’s easy to stay in auto-pilot.

Firstly, let’s start with what financial planning isn’t.

Financial planning isn’t just for the uber wealthy, that have a bunch of money to invest. That’s investment advice, which just a part of financial planning.

Financial planning isn’t just for those about to retire. That’s retirement planning, which is also, just a part of financial planning.

Real financial planning to me is about trying to set yourself up, so that you have choices in how you spend your time and energy in the future.

And let’s not kid ourselves, it’s not easy.

If you’re trying to balance living today, enjoying the moment, making the most of spending time with family and friends AND being able to live later, so that you do have choices available around work and how you spend your time.

Almost always, this is going to involve compromise, and opportunity cost. You are going to have to weigh up different options and work out what is the best pathway forwards for you, and your family.

Real financial planning includes thinking about where you want to live, how you want to spend your time, how to juggle your career with being a great parent or wanting to start a business.

Real financial planning is a juggling act, that focusses on you, and your life, and looks at all aspects of your financial life.

To me, that is something worth spending some time on.
